Davina’s breast cancer story

Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 at the age of 54.

How I was diagnosed

I check myself regularly and go for routine mammograms. I had no symptoms but the result of the mammogram meant I was then referred to the local breast clinic.

On my first visit to the breast care clinic I was told that they were concerned about the image on the mammogram. They thought it was cancer. So, I had a biopsy. I felt afraid and shocked. ‘Why me’ I thought. This was awful.

I was very worried but the breast care team were all very nice. They explained what would happen in the coming weeks. This was an operation to remove the tumour and to do a biopsy on the lymph nodes.

My treatment

I had my operation 4 weeks after diagnosis. This was a lumpectomy and biopsy of the lymph nodes. After the operation I felt sore and tired. But I was glad the tumour was gone and it appears that the lymph nodes were OK.

It’s not long ago that I had my operation. I’m still feeling sore and uncomfortable. But I’m getting stronger every day by doing the exercises I was shown at the hospital.

Challenges and support

I’m such an active person but I had to slow down especially after my operation. That was difficult. I don’t like asking for help. But I had to. My husband has been amazing. We have gone through a lot. But this was the most challenging as my husband felt he couldn’t do anything. But he did every day.

I had a lot of support. The breast care team were on the end of the phone if I had a question.

How to cope

Take things slowly there is no rush. Sleep when you can. Eat healthy and drink plenty of water. Keep positive thoughts in your head. Talk to people, your family and friends. Read information and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
