Stages and types of anal cancer

The stage of anal cancer tells you how big it is and whether it has spread. There are different ways of staging anal cancer. There is the TNM system and the number staging system. The number staging system includes 4 stages – from stage 1 to stage 4.

The type tells you which type of cell the cancer started in.

The number staging system uses the TNM system to divide cancers into stages. Most types of cancer have 4 stages, numbered from 1 to 4

Types of anal cancer

The type of anal cancer you have depends on the type of cell the cancer started in. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of anal cancer.
