Getting diagnosed with anal cancer

You usually start by seeing your GP if you have symptoms that could be due to anal cancer. They will ask you about your general health and may also examine you. Your doctor will then decide whether to do tests or refer you to a specialist.

Seeing your GP when you have symptoms of anal cancer

See your GP if you notice a change that isn't normal for you or if you have any of the possible signs and symptoms of anal cancer.

Referral to a specialist for anal cancer

Your GP should arrange for you to see a specialist if you have symptoms that could be due to anal cancer.

Screening for anal cancer

There is no national screening programme for anal cancer in the UK. This is because there isn’t a test that can pick up anal cancer at an early stage.

Tests for anal cancer

You might have a number of tests to check for anal cancer. This includes an examination of your anus, taking a sample of tissue from the anus and scans.
